Get to know Copenhagen

To help students get familiar and orientate themselves in Copenhagen, DIS organizes a number of events and walk in the early weeks of term. A Scavenger Hunt during the Arrival Workshop will introduce you to the downtown area around the main DIS buildings, while a canal kayaking activity trip let’s you look at Copenhagen from a whole different angle.

A walking tour is also available for newly arrived students, which takes them in the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard, through the streets and squares of Golden Age Copenhagen.

Independent Walking Tours

However, if you cannot make these tours and activities, or would just prefer to walk Copenhagen at your own pace and spread your wings a little, why not try one of the independent walking tours listed below.

In and Around DIS

With DIS located in downtown Copenhagen, there’s a lot to see in the immediate vicinity. Too much in fact – so we’ve put together a tour that never extends more than a seven-minute walk from DIS and takes in all the local attractions and sights. All-in-all, the tour is an hour and a half in length without stops; but it’s easy to pick up where you left off if you fancy spreading it out over a few days.

The Vesterbro Walking Tour

Vesterbro is one of Copenhagen liveliest areas and the second oldest of the working-class districts that sprang up outside the early-modern ramparts as a result of the industrialization of Copenhagen. The purpose of the walk is to get a hands-on impression of Vesterbro as it appeared in its original state, i.e. as the habitat for the lower end of the industrial working class for more than a century (1860s-1960s) and the urban renewal schemes that have been employed since the 1970s and esp. the 1990s in an attempt to rehabilitate the area. The route is a 2-3-hour walking tour of the area with 14 sites to visit. Enjoy!

Harbor Tour

On this tour, you use the regular harbor ferry bus to go up and down the harbor and get off on the way to explore the surrounding buildings and areas. As the ferry is a regular city bus, you just use your transportation pass to get on board. The bus runs every 20 minutes, so plan to spend 20 minutes (or 40) each time you jump off the bus. The tour description begins at the southern end of the route, not far from DIS, but you can use it in reverse, or just go for parts of it.

Copenhagen Palaces Tour

On this tour you will visit four prominent Copenhagen palaces from different periods and built for different purposes. Walking between them takes 10-15 minutes. The route described below is the fastest (can be done in reverse order), but if you want to go chronologically you should follow this sequence: 4-2-1 (wings)-3-1 (main building).
