Seminars on the War in Ukraine

Students, faculty, and external experts met for debates on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and its broader geopolitical, security, and economic context.

In light of the current events in Ukraine, DIS held academic seminars in Stockholm and Copenhagen, to debrief the current situation on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As an educational organization based in Europe, we believe we have the responsibility to stay informed, and continue to educate and engage our students in conversations regarding the injustices of these events.

Speakers included DIS faculty and guest experts across our two locations: Hans Brun, Martin Cleemann Rasmussen, Milosz Jeromin Cordes, PhD, and Alexander Niels-Jacob Hviid. In Copenhagen, we also were joined by Line Wolf Nielsen from International Media Support and David Kendall from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The speakers discussed how the current Russian leadership is attempting to deprive Ukraine of its sovereignty and ability to make independent decisions about its future through invasion and misinformation campaigns. Other points of discussion included the Swedish and Finnish positions on NATO, the willingness to help Ukrainian refugees compared with other recent refugee arrivals, and which news sources we can trust.

A big thank you to our faculty and external speakers for creating this seminar and giving students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to hear expert opinions and ask questions about this pressing situation.

DIS has started a fundraiser through Røde Kors (Red Cross) and donated 15,000 euros in support of Ukrainian refugees. DIS continues to strongly condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and we continue to stand with the Ukrainian people.
